Before I tell you the correct answer, let’s look carefully at each option.” After explaining the pattern and its correct extension, he moves on, giving the class a more difficult pattern to evaluate. He continues the process of displaying more difficult patterns until he can see that only a few students got the right answer. “You guys did really well,” he tells them at the end of class. “Some of these were tough patterns.” After class he looks at the teacher display results that tell him how each student answered. This display gives him valuable data about how each student is progressing in the unit. He plans his next lesson based on what he learns, and he is able to offer personal assistance to the individual students he knows need it.
